Bloomington’s beloved celebration of global sounds is going year-round. To kick off and fund this thrilling development in the regional arts’ scene, Bloomington-based PR firm rock paper scissors is throwing a benefit for Lotus Year-Round. The first public event to be held in the newly renovated Lotus office and performance space begins at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 3.
The evening begins with a performance by Lotus World Music & Arts Festival alum and former Bloomington resident Moira Smiley. Smiley’s resume includes projects with tUnE-yArDs, to Kitka, to Anna & Elizabeth. Smiley’s work demonstrates the global-minded music making Lotus has brought to Southern Indiana since its inception. After Smiley’s performance, Indianapolis-based global music champion DJ Kyle Long takes the lead for a post-performance dance party. Beer and wine will be available during both events. Tickets for both Smiley and Long are available on morelotus.org.
All proceeds will support Lotus’s year-round programming for the new space, which will include a wide range of artists from around the world in an intimate, engaging setting. Other educational programs will also find a home in the old fire station.
“We are so excited to get behind Lotus on this,” enthuses Dmitri Vietze, founder and CEO of rock paper scissors. “I often called Bloomington the World Music Capital of Rural America, and with a permanent venue, that’s now even more true. In addition to their annual citywide-takeover every September, throughout the year Lotus brings artists into the schools around the region and now they can bring students to their own venue. This means that even more school children in Indiana will get to learn from and engage with global culture through music, dance, and the arts.”
Fellow corporate supporters include Indiana’s own musician gear powerhouse Sweetwater, marketing experts Hanapin Marketing, and graphic design masters UnderConsideration. “The support from local businesses and the music industry has been heartening,” says Vietze. “Like us, these other companies believe that what draws people to move to and stay in Bloomington is how special the open-minded culture is. That helps grow businesses and creates an unbeatable lifestyle.” Businesses looking to support this effort can email: music@rockpaperscissors.biz.
